* Superfoetation means the formation of a foetus while there is another foetus is already in the uterus.
Anatomically, chinchillas have ...........................
1 pair of ovaries with fallopian tubes
a bicornate (two horned) uterus
2 cervical apertures
I have never had a chinchilla that has had a fully documented episode of Superfetation - although it is possible that the two kits (see photo) may be an example of superfoetation - who knows??
Rarely, the oestrous cycle continues through pregnancy - which may result in another mating - and possibly a second pregnancy.
Fertilisation of eggs released only days apart (within the same oestrus cycle) can result in kits of slightly differing ages.
N.B.
It is worth noting that kits that share the same placenta may show signs of what looks like different developmental stages. But this may actually be due to one kit getting more nourishment than the other kit.
